Artworks The Arts Council of Beaufort County has moved to Beaufort Town Center and is pleased to announce the line-up of classes that will begin in September. CLASSES ~ Jennifer Kassing-Bradley offers Open Studio Watercolor ClassesEvery Tuesday; 4:30 - 6:30pm; $10 drop in class Open Studio Watercolor Class is for students who have worked, even for a brief time, or have been introduced in some way to the media. The class is designed to help students with issues of composition, color, and perspective in their work. Students are encouraged to bring all of their supplies, as well as any work in progress and photo or drawing references. Dance Techniques with Carolyn Hoadley 2 classes Thursday October 9th; Tuesday October 14th 6:30pm - 8:30pm $12 per class Ages 10 - Adult Registration ~ Contact Caroline Hoadley, misscusa@yahoo.com, Hilton Head 843-842-6272, Cell 864-608-3878 Are you a Dancer who wants to improve your overall technique? Are you a Non-Dancer who wants to learn how to move like a dancer? Are you a Non-Dancer who wants increase flexibility and balance, and tone your overall body in a way that other exercise classes don't address? This is the class for you. Learn proper alignment in balancing and in motion, effective stretching techniques, how to work those small muscles you didn't know you had. The more times you take the class, the more your body changes!!! One and one half hour class includes simple Ballet/Jazz/Modern barre, center work with balancing, floor barre, extensive stretch, and turn techniques and simple walks, all choreographed to music. Carolyn Hoadley is a well-known and accomplished dancer and arts educator in South Carolina.
The Art of Stained Glass with Susan Simpson Learn stained glass copper foil method. Create the pieces you would like to have or give away and have fun. You will cut the pieces for your project, grind it, foil it and solder it to love and cherish. Your first class you will go home with a completed project. You can create beautiful stained glass items even if you can not draw. Are you ready to try something new and exciting, come join us. Suggested Materials ~ sharpie marking pens, masking tape, needle nose pliers, glass cleaner and paper towels.
Tai Chi with J.W. Rone
Environmental Rhythms with Big Black aka Daniel Ray Master musician and Jazz Hall of Fame inductee Big Black will teach his unique style o
f hand drumming. The American-style hand drumming combines elements of Africa,
Indian, Middle Eastern, Cuban and South African rhythms to create the America rhythms. Registration ~ The Arts Council of Beaufort County, 379-2787
Zen Watercolors & Pencil with Tina B. Fripp Exploring the world of shapes, lines, hues, shadows and contrast, composition,
completion of ideas built around a field sketch right in the backyard of the Albergotti
Creek behind ARTworks. We will use both pencil and brush. Ideas will start from
our field walks and then you will have the option to stay realistic or morph into
other ideas. We will enhance your skills and fine tune on site drawing and color
wheel mixing. A great way to learn art tools, papers and materials in a less stress
environment. "The process of making art is our goal." Brainstorming art critique
and discussions. Suggested Materials ~ a set of numbered pencils, a sketch set, kneaded eraser,
simple watercolor set or primary colors, watercolor brushes, watercolor pad or watercolor
papers; Tina B. will bring plenty of paint brushes to experiment & learn with. Tina B. Fripp is a well-known Lowcountry visual artist, muralist, and arts educator in Beaufort County.
Nature Drawing Basics with Tina B. Fripp Back to the basics of realistic sketching and drawing with mother nature from the
backyard at ArtWorks, home of the Arts Council of Beaufort County, as subject matter.
Marshes of the Albergotti creek will help us focus during this course to draw what
we see. Eye to hand, mind into the beautiful world of the natural all around us.
We will utilize line countour, expressive line, shading and composition. Some
cross-hatch techniques will be explored. This art session will guide you through the
process of making art and how our environment affects how we perceive and feel our
art subject choices. We are very fortunate with the ability here at ArtWorks to
venture out the back door into an on site plein air marsh tidal view. On site
drawing and talks. Even bring those binoculars to catch a better view of that bird. Suggested Materials ~ a set of numbered graduated pencils or a sketch pencil set,
kneaded eraser, 11x14 or larger drawing pad, one sheet of acetate
The Truth is Stranger: A Writing Workshop Exploring Narrative Nonfiction with Melinda Copp This four-week writing workshop will encourage participants to make sense of and
create art from their everyday lives in writing memoir, essay, or another form of
narrative nonfiction. Through readings, exercises, and thoughtful examination of
student work, we'll study the intricacies of the genre and forms, voice, character,
theme, resolution, and structure. The goal of these sessions is to transform
personal experience into compelling stories, with participants writing and
polishing a short piece of writing. Melinda Copp is a Bluffton-based freelance writer and book editor working on her
Master's in Fine Arts in creative writing at Goucher College in Baltimore.
Ink-Blending "Illustrative Painting" ~ Fripp on Fridays with Tina B. Fripp Start the weekend with Art & Enter with both sides of the brain. Well maybe mostly
the right however this art session will use some left. We will embark on an art
learning journey with my artworks and art life as the example. "Ink-Blending" is my
term for starting a drawing/sketch or rendering with pen & ink and then blending in
watercolors or an ink wash to soften the line image. A marriage of the pen and the
brush. We will use contour lines, cross-hatch and contemporary expressive styles.
Focus on primary color mixing to achieve all of our hues. Paint brush types and
uses. Explore the right tools for the painting. Suggested Materials ~ pens, colored pens, suggested watercolors Cadmium Red/Cad Yellow
and Mediterranean Blue, watercolor brushes, a variety of drawing and watercolor paper.
Book Binding with Nicole Blowers Make your own book from cover to cover. Create one-of-a-kind journals, poetry books,
scrapbooks, photo albums, gifts and keepsakes. This intensive bookbinding class will introduce you to the history, tools and
techniques of hand bookbinding. Beginning with simple book structures such as
pamphlets and accordion books, we will move on to more advanced stitching techniques
including Japanese Stab Binding, Coptic Binding, and Signature Binding. You will learn
about paper, cloth, boards, adhesives and methods of folding, sewing and gluing. Upon
completing this class, you will leave with an assortment of unique handmade books as well
as a greater understanding of Fine Bookbinding. * Cost includes 16 hrs of class time + materials to make: Nicole Blowers is a professionally trained artist with an undergraduate degree in
Visual Arts from SUNY New Paltz and 25 graduate credits from Savannah College of
Art and Design. Since college, she has had the pleasure of working professionally
for two custom goldsmithing studios on Madison Avenue in New York City while
showing her work nationally.
Screenplay Writing Workshop with Dan Christoff Do you have a great idea for a screenplay but don't know how to get it on paper?
Does your brain freeze up when thinking about plot structure, character development,
dialogue and themes? When seeing the current crop of films, have you told yourself you
can do better if only you knew how? Welcome to Screenwriting I; this course gives you the tools you need to write
an effeective, compelling screenplay. From beginning to end, you will develop
your idea by using a step by step method guaranteed to make your finished work shine
like an Oscar. Instructor Dan Christoff has been awarded such honors as Mississippi's
Eugene F. Butler Fiction Prize and a Master Writer's Residency for fiction and screenwriting
from the Atlantic Center for the Arts. Dan has now sold seven contracted screen plays and has just
been contracted for an eighth by SSKS productions.
Experiments with Paper with Faye Smit This class will "seriously play" with paper creating small booklets, shaping
paper over forms, weaving and patchwork. Students will explore methods of tearing,
cutting and layering paper.
Handbuilding with Clay with Trevor Foster Learn basic hand building techniques. Each week student's work on individual
projects using the technique taught that day, and using what was learned from
previous projects. Glazing techniques are taught during the last two sessions.
Glazes and firing are included in the clay purchase. Trevor Foster is an accomplished potter and educator as well as the owner of
Blackwater Studio's in Branson, SC specializing in hand thrown ceramics.
Wheelthrown Pottery with Trevor Foster Learn basic wheel techniques or refine your skills and explore new techniques if
you have worked on a wheel previously. Each class will work on building individual
skills and techniques towards an end result of proficiency on the wheel. Glazing
techniques are taught during the last two sessions. Glazes and firing are
included in the clay purchase.
Printmaking with Faye Smit This class will "seriously play" with printmaking techniques without using a
press. Students will experiment with monoprints on paper and printing on fabric.
Hot Glass Beadmaking Class with Curtis Cecil Learn the ancient art of glass beadmaking using a blow torch and other hand tools. Discover how to make basic round centered beads, colored dot applications, clear coating, frit millifories, and more (different bead shapes will be explored for those that catch on quick!) *All materials, tools and safety glasses included in the kit! Pre-registration required with $50 deposit.
Mixed Medium in Jewelry Fabrication with Peggy Carvell This class will teach you the assembly of objects implementing metal, wire, and beads to create a broach
Hammered Metal Necklace with Peggy Carvell This class will teach you cutting, forming, and hammering metal and assembly to create a necklace
Hollow Form Jewelry Bead with Peggy Carvell This class will teach you to hand saw and form disks, soldering the two together, and drilling a design pattern to create a metal bead necklace.
Fused Wire and Stone Pendant with Peggy Carvell In this class you will learrn the torch technique to fuse metals and create prongs to set large stones for pendants.
Understanding Painting Color (Acrylic or Oil) with Linda Sheppard Students will gain experience in understanding the problems of painting color. We will discuss muddiness, luminosity, the use of crisp brush strokes, the use of color against colorlessness as part of the center of interest, and how to mix and use the warm and cool colors to achieve transparency. The class will have small lessons on color principles, learn to mix the colors properly for the concepts and then paint small paintings on canvas paper to process the principles.
Forged and Hinged Bracelet with Peggy Carvell This class will include shaping, drilling and hinging bars of metal to create a bracelet.
Understanding Painting Color (Watercolor) with Linda Sheppard Students will gain experience in uderstanding the problems of painting clean, transparent colors in watercolor.
